December 23, 2025
If you’ve been dreaming of life without glasses or contact lenses, LASIK might be right for you. But how do you know if you’re a good candidate? Below, we’ll explore some of the most commonly asked questions about LASIK candidacy to help you decide if laser vision correction can offer you clearer vision.
Common Questions About LASIK Candidacy
Below are brief answers to frequently asked questions regarding LASIK eligibility. Because every eye is unique, these questions is supposed to provide general information but does not replace a consultation with our experienced LASIK surgeons who can provide you with advice that is tailored to your eyes.
What are some basic guidelines on identifying who is a good candidate for LASIK?
Generally, you need to be at least 18–21 years old with a stable prescription, healthy corneas, and no major health issues that affect healing (e.g., uncontrolled diabetes).
Are most people eligible for LASIK?
Roughly 80–90% of people who are interested in LASIK meet initial screening criteria.
If I was told by another eye doctor that I am not a candidate, should I visit you for a second opinion?
Yes. Different practices use different equipment and approaches, we have advanced lasers such as the VISX Star 4 Custom Laser Platform, which may enable more complicated cases to successfully undergo LASIK.
How old do you have to be to get LASIK? Are there age limits for LASIK surgery?
Our surgeons recommend being at least 18 years old with a stable prescription for at least one year. On the other hand, there are no restrictions on how old someone can be to have LASIK.
Can I get LASIK if I have dry eyes?
Mild to moderate dry eye can often be managed before LASIK. Severe dry eye may disqualify you or require special treatment first.
Can I get LASIK if I’ve had previous eye surgery?
Possibly. Prior surgeries like cataract removal or RK (radial keratotomy) don’t always rule out LASIK. A detailed evaluation with our LASIK surgeons will determine your eligibility.
Can I get LASIK if I have glaucoma?
Early or well-controlled glaucoma doesn’t automatically exclude you from having LASIK. A detailed evaluation with our LASIK surgeons will determine your eligibility during which time they will perform a detailed pressure and optic nerve evaluation.
Can I have LASIK if I have a high prescription?
High levels of nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism can sometimes be corrected with LASIK, but extremely high prescriptions may need alternative options. We welcome you to schedule a consultation with our LASIK surgeons to assess your eligibility.
How do I know if my prescription is stable for LASIK?
If your prescription hasn’t significantly changed in at least 12 months, typically when the change either higher or lower is .50 diopters or less, it’s considered stable.
Can I get LASIK if I have astigmatism in only one eye?
Yes. LASIK can correct astigmatism in one or both eyes, however you will need an evaluation to confirm that your cornea is suitable.
Is LASIK safe for someone with diabetes?
If your diabetes is well-controlled and your vision is stable, you may still be a candidate. It is important to ensure that you are blood sugar is controlled well, as poorly managed diabetes can lead to unpredictable results with LASIK. Patients with diabetic eye disease such as diabetic retinopathy are not candidates for LASIK.
We Value Our Patients Feedback
Michelle M. – Washington, DC (5 Stars)
“Wow, if you are getting LASIK this is the place. As most people are, I was terrified. The appointment process was a pain (phone) but the in-office staff are fantastic (Leesburg). From the nice ladies at the front desk to the amazing folks who got me ready and did the preop tests—I felt good about the whole experience. Dr. Nasrullah himself was amazingly patient with my 100 questions and talked me through the entire procedure. Highly recommend.”

Charles F. (5 Stars)
“Had my PRK surgery with Dr. Nasrullah 4 years ago. The process was smooth, and I’m still seeing 20/20 now. His office staff was friendly and helpful, and Dr. Nasrullah was a great person to work with—even all these years later during a basic eye exam.”
